Trip Overview
The Rongai Route is a northern approach to Kilimanjaro, starting near the Kenyan border. It’s quieter, gradual, and gives excellent acclimatization. The trek passes through rainforest, moorlands, alpine desert, and ends with the iconic Uhuru Peak summit.

Details Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival – Transfer to Londorossi Gate – Simba Camp
- Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha.
- Meet guides, drive to Londorossi Gate (2.5–3 hrs).
- Trek to Simba Camp (2,200 m / 7,218 ft).
- Overnight at Simba Camp.
Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp
- Trek through lush rainforest to moorlands.
- Altitude: 2,200 m → 3,300 m (7,218 ft → 10,827 ft)
- Distance & Duration: 10–12 km, 5–6 hrs
- Overnight at Second Cave Camp.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Third Cave Camp
- Gentle ascent through moorlands, ideal for acclimatization.
- Altitude: 3,300 m → 3,800 m (10,827 ft → 12,467 ft)
- Distance & Duration: 8–10 km, 5–6 hrs
- Overnight at Third Cave Camp.
Day 4: Third Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp
- Trek through moorlands with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
- Altitude: 3,800 m → 4,200 m (12,467 ft → 13,780 ft)
- Distance & Duration: 10–12 km, 5–6 hrs
- Overnight at Kikelewa Camp.
Day 5: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Camp
- Trek over the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
- Altitude: 4,200 m → 4,700 m (13,780 ft → 15,420 ft)
- Distance & Duration: 8–10 km, 5–6 hrs
- Overnight at Kibo Camp, rest for summit night.
Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Camp → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
- Start at midnight for the summit.
- Trek through the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft).
- Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,205 ft) for overnight.
- Distance & Duration: 6–8 km up, 4–5 km down, 10–12 hrs total
Day 7: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate – Transfer to Moshi / Arusha
- Descend through forest to Marangu Gate.
- Receive summit certificates and transfer to Moshi/Arusha.
- Distance & Duration: ~20 km, 5–6 hrs
