Trip Overview

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro’s only northern approach, starting near the Kenyan border. It is less crowded, with gradual inclines, making it ideal for acclimatization. The trek offers stunning views of the Kenyan plains, dense forest, moorlands, alpine desert, and the summit of Uhuru Peak.

Details Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi / Arusha – Transfer to Londorossi Gate – Simba Camp

  • Arrive at Kiliminjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha.
  • Meet your guides and transfer to Londorossi Gate (approx. 2.5–3 hours drive).
  • Complete registration and brief orientation at the gate.
  • Start trek: Londorossi Gate → Simba Camp (2,200 m / 7,218 ft)
  • Distance & Duration: 4–5 km, 2–3 hours
  • Overnight at Simba Camp.

Highlights: Lush rainforest, first encounter with local flora and wildlife.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

  • Trek through the forest and moorland zones.
  • Gradual ascent with views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes and Kenyan plains.
  • Altitude: 2,200 m → 3,300 m (7,218 ft → 10,827 ft)
  • Distance & Duration: 10–12 km, 5–6 hours
  • Overnight at Second Cave Camp.

Highlights: Stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks; unique moorland vegetation.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp – Kikelewa Camp

  • Trek from moorlands into alpine desert.
  • Beautiful landscapes with giant heathers and dramatic escarpments.
  • Altitude: 3,300 m → 4,200 m (10,827 ft → 13,780 ft)
  • Distance & Duration: 10–12 km, 5–6 hours
  • Overnight at Kikelewa Camp.

Highlights: Panoramic views, excellent acclimatization.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Camp

  • Trek over the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
  • Pass Mawenzi Tarn for photos; prepare for summit attempt.
  • Altitude: 4,200 m → 4,700 m (13,780 ft → 15,420 ft)
  • Distance & Duration: 8–10 km, 5–6 hours
  • Overnight at Kibo Camp.

Highlights: Breathtaking alpine scenery; early dinner and rest for summit night.

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Camp → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

  • Night ascent: Start around midnight from Kibo Camp.
  • Trek through the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft).
  • Distance & Duration: 6–8 km to summit, 6–8 hours; descent to Horombo Hut ~4–5 hours
  • Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720 m / 12,205 ft) for overnight.

Highlights: Sunrise at Uhuru Peak, iconic Kilimanjaro achievement, views of Mawenzi.

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate – Transfer to Moshi / Arusha

  • Descend through the forest to Marangu Gate.
  • Receive summit certificates.
  • Transfer to Moshi or Arusha for onward travel.
  • Distance & Duration: 20 km, 5–6 hours

Highlights: Reflection on the trek, farewell to guides and porters.
