Trip Overview

The 6-Day Marangu Route is ideal for climbers who want extra acclimatization to improve summit success. It follows the classic “Coca-Cola Route,” with hut accommodations at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts. The extended day allows for a short acclimatization hike before the summit, making the climb less strenuous.

Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

  • Distance & Duration: 8 km / 3–4 hours
  • Altitude: 1,870 m → 2,700 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Begin trekking through rainforest with giant ferns and birds.
    • Arrive at Mandara Hut for overnight.
  • Accommodation: Mandara Hut (dormitory style)
  • Meals: Lunch, Dinner
  • Notes: Relax, hydrate, and acclimatize.

Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

  • Distance & Duration: 12 km / 5–6 hours
  • Altitude: 2,700 m → 3,720 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Trek through Heather and Moorland zones.
    • Arrive at Horombo Hut for overnight.
  • Accommodation:Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Notes: Short acclimatization walks around Horombo to help adjustment.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day

  • Distance & Duration: 6–8 km / 3–4 hours
  • Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,000 m → 3,720 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Trek to Zebra Rocks or higher Moorland points, then return to Horombo.
    • Helps your body adjust to altitude before Kibo Hut and summit.
  • Accommodation:Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Notes: Take it easy, stay hydrated, and rest in the afternoon.

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

  • Distance & Duration: 10 km / 5–6 hours
  • Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Trek through alpine desert zone to Kibo Hut, resting before summit attempt.
  • Accommodation: Kibo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Notes: Early dinner and rest; summit push starts around midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

  • Distance & Duration: 17 km / 12–14 hours
  • Altitude: 4,700 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Midnight departure for summit climb.
    • Reach Gilman’s Point (~5,685 m) for sunrise.
    • Continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
    • Descend to Horombo Hut for overnight.
  • Accommodation:Horombo Hut
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Notes: Summit day is long and physically demanding.

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Transfer

  • Distance & Duration: 20 km / 5–6 hours
  • Altitude: 3,720 m → 1,870 m
  • Route & Highlights:
    • Descend through Moorland and Rainforest zones.
    • Collect your summit certificate at Marangu Gate.
    • Transfer to Moshi/Arusha for onward travel or overnight.
