Trip Overview
A 2-day trek from Arusha to Oldonyo Lengai, Tanzania’s sacred volcano. Day 1: drive to Lake Natron and overnight at base camp. Day 2: early morning summit climb with sunrise views over the Rift Valley, then descend and return to Arusha. A moderate trek offering volcanic landscapes, Lake Natron vistas, and Maasai cultural encounters.
Details Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha – Lake Natron – Base Camp
- Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM): Pick up from your hotel in Arusha.
- Drive to Lake Natron: Approximately 4–5 hours via scenic routes through the Rift Valley. Stop for photos and short breaks along the way.
- Lunch: En route or upon arrival at Lake Natron.
- Afternoon: Orientation with your guide about the volcano, safety briefing, and preparation for the climb. Optional short walk around the base to explore the lava formations and local Maasai villages.
- Evening: Overnight at a camp or lodge near Lake Natron. Dinner and rest for the summit climb.
Day 2: Oldonyo Lengai Summit and Return to Arusha
- Early Morning (2:00–3:00 AM): Begin the trek to the summit of Oldonyo Lengai.
- Trek Duration: About 4–6 hours ascent over volcanic sand and rocky terrain. Guides and porters accompany the trek.
- Summit Experience: Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and surrounding volcanoes. Depending on volcanic activity, you may see active craters or cooled lava formations.
- Descent: Approximately 3–4 hours back to base camp. Rest and refresh.
- Lunch: At base camp or local lodge.
- Afternoon: Drive back to Arusha (4–5 hours), with optional stops for photos of the Rift Valley landscapes.
- Evening: Drop-off at your Arusha hotel. End of trek.
