Details Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha/Moshi → Mount Hanang Base Camp
- Pick-up: Early morning from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi (if starting from nearby towns like Katesh or Karatu, travel time is shorter).
- Drive: 4–5 hours to Katesh, where we will obtain your hiking permit.
- Lunch: Enjoy a hot meal before starting the hike.
Hike to Base Camp
- Trail: Begins through a small forest; as you ascend, trees get shorter, transitioning into bush and grassland.
- Vegetation: Heath, moorland, Protea trees, and Erica trees; butterflies are common along the trail.
- Camp: Located at 3,100 m / 10,170 ft, offering stunning views.
- Distance & Time: 8.5 km / 5.3 miles, approximately 5–6 hours.
- Altitude Gain: 1,300 m / 4,265 ft.
- Meals Included: Hot lunch and dinner.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 2: Summit & Lake Balangida
Summit Trek
- Wake-up: 3:30 AM for an early morning ascent (headtorch and warm clothes required).
- Hike: 2.5 hours to the summit to enjoy sunrise and panoramic views of rivers, lakes, and surrounding landscapes.
- Descent: Return to camp for breakfast.
Return & Lake Visit
- Descent: Hike down to the gate (3–4 hours).
- Lunch: Hot meal at the gate.
- Drive: 30 minutes–1 hour to Lake Balangida, a spectacular soda lake with a high concentration of sodium carbonate, supporting one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth.
